The empowerment of women has become one of the most important concerns of 21^st century. Various efforts have been made by government to address this issue and enhance the socio economic status of women. Empowerment of women is essentially the process of upliftment of economic social and political status of women. This paper attempts to examine the policies initiated towards empowering women by government of India and also highlight the hindrances in the path of women empowerment and recommend suggestions for women empowerment in India.
