Abstract
The study assessed the national drug law enforcement agency awareness programmes on drug abuse in Anambra State, Nigeria. A research question and one hypothesis guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study comprised 108 NDLEA staff (Source: Drug Demand Reduction Unit, Personnel Unit, Ontisha, 2018); 2,544 civil defence corps (Source: Servicom Unit, NSCDC Zonal Office, Awka, 2019) and 356,745 youths aged 25 – 29 years in Anambra State. The sample size for this study is 108 NDLEA staff; 346 civil defence corps and 360 community youths, consisting of a total of 814 respondents. In selecting the sample size for the number of civil defence corps and community youths, Taro Yamane formula was used. A structured questionnaire titled “Assessment of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s Awareness Programmes Questionnaire” (ANDLEAAPQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts. Cronbach Alpha was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and an overall co-efficient value of 0.75 was achieved. Mean was used to answer the research question while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level. The findings revealed that the respondents agreed on the effectiveness of NDLEA on embarking on awareness programmes. The findings also revealed that there is a significant difference in the mean ratings of NDLEA staff, community members and civil defense on the effectiveness of NDLEA in embarking on awareness programmes in Anambra State. It was recommended amongst others that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in collaboration with Anambra Ministry of Education must intensify their anti-drug campaigns and awareness programmes on illicit drugs in order to have a drug- free society with a special focus on both students and youths in the State.
