Abstract
This study explores the integration of local
cultural heritage and sustainable practices in the context of pilgrimage
tourism in South India. Sacred destinations, such as temples, shrines, and
religious circuits, are deeply interwoven with the region's cultural fabric and
attract millions of visitors annually. However, the environmental, social, and
cultural challenges posed by the increasing influx of pilgrims necessitate
innovative solutions. The research aims to investigate how local cultural
practices and community involvement can contribute to sustainable tourism
development while preserving the sanctity and integrity of these destinations.
By focusing on selected case studies, this project seeks to develop a framework
for promoting cultural sustainability and responsible tourism practices that
benefit both local communities and visitors.
